Why You Shouldn't Use Coconut Oil on Your Bikini Line
If you're like me, you love the smell of coconut. It takes you back to that summer on the beach when you had zero fuzz to give about anything. If you're also like me, you grew up hearing, "just put coconut oil on your dry skin". Like, the kind of coconut oil from a cooking jar. Don't get me wrong, it did wonders for my dry skin, however.... it also took it's toll and caused some breakouts.
Coconut oil is a comedogenic, which means it is more likely to clog pores. Clogged pores lead to break outs and may cause more ingrown hair. Coconut oil shouldn't be used on the face or bikini area where these breakouts are more likely to happen, especially if you have acne and/or ingrown hair prone skin.
Skin is naturally acidic, which means it likes to sit in the 4.7-5.75 pH range. Putting product that is too acidic (0 is battery acid) or too alkaline (detergents) can cause damage to your skin's barrier. Coconut oil sits around a 7-8 pH which means it is 100-1000 times more alkaline than your skin. While this may be fine in thicker areas of your skin (feet, hands), it should not be used in more sensitive and thinner parts of your skin (face and bikini line).
Coconut oil is great for:
- thicker skin areas
- cooking
